WHAT HI-FI? SHOW 2018 – MUMBAI SHOW COVERAGE

  • WRITTEN BY PULASTYA

What Hi-Fi Show 2018 – Report

Part 1

8th Floor

Sahil International

Focal range of loudspeakers were on static display right from the entry level sub/sats to the flagship Utopia series. The only products on demo were the Muso & Muso QB from the Naim stables in the large stateroom. Whilst it was good to see the new focal distributor showing the intent to take things forward, we truly wished that they had taken more trouble to atleast set-up a couple of demos of the top flight models from the Focal & Naim product range . We were quite disappointed at not having an experience of them and also conveyed our displeasure to the concerned personnel at Sahil International. All we can do is hope that their next showing will have addressed this aspect.

PTC

The title sponsors of the what hi-fi show pulled out all the stops and showcased their entire portfolio of brands and products, with almost all the popular model ranges covered from each of the brands represented by them. They had two large staterooms with each being dedicated to stereo and home theatre demonstrations. For home theatre, they had Ascendo Immersive Audio paired with McIntosh Amplifiers and Processor/Source, whilst for stereo, they had Dynaudio/Accuphase, Sonus Faber/Accuphase pairings with their show stopper set up having a pairing of McIntosh monoblock power amplifiers, an integrated amp used as a pre amplifier and a dedicated phono pre amplifier connected to a McIntosh Turntable, all hooked up to the behemoth Monitor Audio PL500II speakers. The entire cabling for the show stopper system was Nordost. Yes, this was quite a feat being pulled off but sadly, in our humble opinion not managed or set up in the manner befitting the stature and cost of the entire setup. Out of the entire smorgasbord of exquisite equipment on demo, we particularly enjoyed the Sonus Faber Serafino Tradition which not only looked gorgeous in a wenge finish but also sounded dreamy and melodious, paired with the Accuphase E470 integrated amplifier. We selected this pairing as the ‘Beautiful in Sound & Looks’ set-up of the show. We also look forward to hearing this set-up in depth in the future. To say that PTC went on to make a huge statement goes without saying. We just hope that our constructive criticism/feedback given to the PTC management was taken in the right spirit as we mean well and hope to see such top flight equipment being showcased in the manner it truly deserves.

BenQ India

They had taken another huge stateroom, which was filled with demos of various projectors being run simultaneously at different positions and angles. What BenQ managed to do was quite simple and it was managed beautifully – they completely confused the life out of a visitor entering the room as it was having multiple images being bombarded onto the viewer from all sides and angles thereby making it very difficult to understand or comprehend what was really happening. We quickly were in and out as what we saw was not our cup of tea and to be honest disorienting! A classic example of what happens when one becomes overzealous and tries to cover every square inch of a huge room to maximise the value proposition.

Part 2

12th Floor

Nucleus Audio

Launched in India during the show, Lyravox was the showcase product by Nucleus Audio. The 2 models on demo were Stereomaster SM3-150 and Stereomaster SM2-200. Both were magnificently mounted on a drywall erected specifically for the show and elegantly wrapped in a wallpaper in silver hue. We heard both the models and quite liked the presentation of what is essentially a uber high end sound bar with lots of connectivity. Lyravox intends to be super exclusive and truly bespoke in offering custom finishes in their models to the very well heeled and discerning elite individuals. A good concept should be well represented by Nucleus Audio.

Burmester India Pvt. Ltd.

The gear consisted of B100 Loudspeakers, 111 Music Center, 909 Mk5 Power Amplifier, 948 Power Conditioner Once again we had the same approach by the person handling Burmester in India. Play it loud and be impervious to the inconvenience caused to the other exhibitors or their sensibilities. Nothing new and nothing has changed either in equipment or in the mindset.

Casadigi

The team showcased how a dedicated room can be well managed by the automation software called academi created by casadigi. A product that is expensive but also worth for a project where no compromise is expected at a cost no object level.

Fairdeal Electronics

The two rooms had one with static display of Revel range of speakers and subwoofers along with electronics of Arcam and Synthesis. The other room had a JBL Synthesis home theatre set up that had been calibrated by the synthesis team of Harman.

TCST Building Solutions

Showcased state of the art door locking technology, switches, room controllers with OLED displays and motion detectors.

LG India

A couple of OLED panels were showcased with the spotlight being on the Signature OLED TV’s

Studio19 London

This is a new company that have just launched their new range of Solo E500X bluetooth speaker, which also has HDMI & AUX connectivity. We heard it briefly but could not make much out of it due to too many visitors in the room. We look forward to reviewing it in the near future.

Nexus Audio (Room 1)

This was the one of the two rooms of Nexus Audio, having a pair of Graham Audio Chartwell LS3/5 with a Marantz Melody all in one providing the source and amplification. Unbelievable sound from such tiny monitors that truly defy logic. Our pick of the show for ‘Small is Potent” sound of the show.

Nexus Audio (Room 2)

This is the room that inspite of consciously not wanting to visit more than once, we simply could not do so. The reason was that the set up consisted of Kaiser Audio’s to be launched entry of speakers called the Furioso Mini, in absolute entry level price point of their range (sadly still highly unobtanium for the majority of us) paired with Octave V40SE integrated valve amplifier with Black Box and AVM CS8.2 used as a CD player. We heard this setup evolving from Friday onwards with Sunday being where it became quite apparent that we would have no choice but to give it the ‘Cost no Object’ Sound of The Show, grudgingly so but that’s how the cookie crumbles. Truly magnificent and jaw dropping resolution, attack, decay and timing. We were hoping that we could have some true competition to a Nexus Audio set-up but yet again the man behind Nexus Audio has come, seen and conquered the show.

Absolute Sound

Showcased yet again with the Kii Audio active speakers with Roon Nucleus, SOtM, Transparent Audio, Still Points and Emotion and Kraft as accompaniments. Team absolute sound went in for the whole hog and won our ‘Stellar Room Presentation’ and ‘Audiophile Sound 100%’ of the show. We just wish that team Absolute Sound should have had a similar approach as the next room showcasing Nordost products similar in principle, to demonstrate how much of a difference still points make in a given setup. Hopefully, next time we could experience the same.

IITAV

The room where we were in charge of in terms of demos and playing vinyl jockeys for most of the show. We enjoyed our duties in the company of the Nordost sales and technical representative. He truly showcased how much of a difference a good distribution box, power cords, grounding device and resonance control devices can make in a given set up. Sadly, they are frightfully expensive and unobtanium for the majority of us. We are glad that atleast we could hear the difference all the Nordost product range makes as hearing is truly believing. The setup consisted of a Project Xtension 9 with a Ortofon 2M Red Moving Magnet Cartridge(The weak link), Project Phono Box S Phono Pre Amp, Burmester 102 CD player, Balanced Audio Technology VK23SE Pre Amplifier, VK225SE Power Amplifier, Nordost Valhalla2, Frey2, Tyr2 Power Cords, Frey2 Interconnects, QKore6 Ground with QKore Wires, QB8 Distribution Box, Sort Kones AS, AC, BC, TC & SortLifts. Without sounding biased, we found that most of the visitors enjoyed the sound of the set up with the Nordost demonstration being the proverbial cherry on the cake.

Rivera International (Room 1)

Audiovector SR3 Avantgarde Arrete loudspeakers were paired with a McIntosh MA8000 integrated amplifier and MCD550 CD Player. The overall sound of this setup was fantastic and well appreciated by most visitors at the show. We picked this pairing as the ‘Ideal Synergy Stereo’ setup of the show. They also had a German Physics Borderland MKIV on static display.

Rivera International (Room 2)

Audiovector QR series multichannel set up Full of impact and gusto, however we could not spend much time due to the crowds that kept coming to their room.

Audiovision India

The room was filled with static displays of the new 7 series of B&W, 8032D3, CI Series, multimedia speakers, head phones along with Soundcast bluetooth speakers which ironically were the only ones available for demo. Most of us were disappointed by not being able to hear the new 7 series of speakers but we certainly were not surprised by what was in store at the room as over the years we have expected nothing more.

ProFx

Apart from a fancy static display of Denon AVR’s, they had a few Polk Soundbars on demo along with KEF LS50 active monitors. Not much action happening when we popped in hence we clicked a few pics and moved on.

Part 3

13th Floor

Vinshek

Gallo Acoustic was showcased by team Vinshek in a manner that conveyed the desired effect. Simple & elegant, the Strada 2 & Micro SE models were on demo & static display.

Babbler Marketing

The flagship Q Acoustics floor standing speakers – Concept 500 were showcased with some old electronics that we frankly felt did a lot of injustice to the overall presentation. A couple of systemline multi room speaker systems were showcased in 2 hard cases, assorted QED cables hanging on a stand and a couple of standees completed the room. Overall not the best room planning which resulted in sub optimal execution.

Luxury Personified LLP

Contrasting to the earlier room was this one that went all out to make a splashy statement, not only in visuals but also loud and in your face sound, courtesy a pair of Devialet Phantom Golds, belting out hip hop, trance and EDM. Luxury personified LLP wanted to achieve a certain aura with the placement of a background advertisement wall of images with 3D images popping out of the canvas. A devialet amp was also showcased like a glistening jewel in its display case with illumination. We spent a few minutes blasting metal, hard and stoner rock to the amusement of other show visitors. The Phantom gold’s just go loud without a sweat and keep pulsating to the beat, courtesy their vibrating woofers which just look like they are going to pop out of their cabinets. Loud and more loud, that’s their claim to fame. If you want expensive party speakers, then look no further.

HSB AV

A room that was under a serious cloud of uncertainty right till 24 hours prior to the show kicking off, what with the M&K consignment reaching at the nth hour. Inspite of being under tremendous duress, we were glad that team HSB AV pulled it off! Being the new distributors for M&K sound, HSB AV showcased the new S150 Series of cinema speakers paired with dual X10 subwoofers that were hooked up to a Storm Audio Processor. The set up played music concerts as well as movie scenes with equal aplomb and we must say that the set up was certainly worth being awarded as the ‘Best HT Set Up of the Show’, cost no bar. An entry level set of M&K Speakers were also set up in the room outside along with a static display of inwall speaker models but we did not get an opportunity to spend time listening to this set up due to crowd gathering at the time of our visit.

Viewsonic

The focus was on 3 new models that were on demo, namely the PX727-4K, PX747-4K & PX800HD projectors. Viewsonic has an aggressive plan for the above models and we shall soon be having more information on how they intend to get the target audience to experience these models. We also look forward to playing with these models and reviewing them in the near future.

Audio Excellence

The 2 rooms had the following on demo/static display. The first room just showcased an LCR set up consisting of Definitive Technologies BP9080X with built in Atmos Modules, CS9080 centre channel, SR9080 surrounds and Parasound A52 Power amplifier. This set up just played very loud  music clips all day long which to be honest we did not appreciate as invariably the sound from this room interfered with not only the rooms around it but also the rooms on the 12th floor! Not good and something we are sure most of the exhibitors also did not appreciate. The second room was chock a block with static display of Legacy Speakers, Sub woofers, Definitive Technology Inwall/Ceiling Speakers & Sub woofers along with Parasound Amplifiers from their Zone Master & Halo Series. Thankfully, a pair of Legacy Audio Calibre Stand Mount Speakers and Definitive Technology Demand D11 Stand Mount Speakers were available for demonstration via Parasound Amplification. We have heard the Calibre’s earlier and know what they are capable of so took the opportunity to hear the Demand D11’s which to be honest are quite good and need to be heard more by stereo enthusiasts as they have what it takes to be as a good option for listening to music. We hope to hear more of them in the near future if and when we receive a pair as promised for a review.

Lakozy Impex & Services

Another bazaar like scenario with a ton of speakers and electronics from the PSB and NAD stables, with an illuminated display of a Bluesound wall of products. Supra cables & distribution boards were also showcased and on display. Besides a small chat with the Lakozy reps, we clicked pics and moved onto covering the next room as there was nothing new to hear nor talk about.

MZ Audio Distribution

This year the showcase was on Morel in wall home theatre speakers showcased with the new Marantz SR8012 receiver. We were given some demos of clips from you tube as well as blurays but to be very honest the set up sounded really bad and not worth talking much beyond. Highly disappointing is an understatement.

AV Nirvana

As soon as we walked in, we realised that this is going to be a good experience as immediately we felt involved in the ongoing demo that was underway. Inspite of standing and not being ideally positioned to enjoy the demo, what we felt was something special, which was confirmed by whomsoever we asked with regard to this very set up. Truly a commendable effort from team AV Nirvana as their entry was completely last minute and unplanned. We have no hesitation to state this set up as the ‘Best Home Theatre Experience’ in a defined budget. The equipment used were Phase Tech inwall speakers, with a Pioneer AVR.

That covers our report for the recently concluded What Hi-Fi? Show 2018 held in Mumbai. We hope that we have covered the entire show barring a few instances where we did not have the opportunity to visit/see & hear. Our coverage is very much so unbiased and relates to what we as AV enthusiasts first & foremost felt, saw and experienced. We now look forward to experiencing more during the next show that tentatively will be held in a few months from now, stay tuned!

PALM EXPO 2017 – MUMBAI

  • WRITTEN BY DENOM

The 2017 edition of Palm Expo took place from 1st to 3rd of June 2017. As has been our customary practice for the past 6 years, we visited on the 2nd day of the expo and as usual we covered the same via pictures taken as seen below:

WHAT HI-FI? SHOW 2017 MUMBAI – SHOW COVERAGE

This years What HiFi? Show 2017, held at Hotel St. Regis – Mumbai was one of the best shows organised by the What HiFi? publication. Kudos to them for learning from their past shows and taking constructive criticism on board which resulted in the show being lauded by the AV industry exhibitors as well as the visitors. We will be covering the entire show in parts, which we will keep updating as we go along.

Part 1

8th Floor Coverage:

The Main venue for visitors registration was on this floor and as soon as people entered the floor from the lifts they were greeted with the B&W Nautilus regally displayed, one piece only though sadly only as a static display in the passage.

The five staterooms on the floor were taken by M/s.KEI(Elac, Denon), M/s.Cinebels(Jamo, Klipsch, Roksan), M/s.Harman India represented by Fairdeal Electronics(JBL Synthesis, Revel, Lexicon, Mark Levinson), M/s.Cadence Audio(Nagra, Spendor, YG Acoustics, Siltech, Crystal Cables, SME) and lastly M/s.PTC(Focal, Monster, McIntosh, Sonus Faber, Konig, Origin Acoustics, ATI)

We started with the KEI room, which had a couple of Denon Amps/Receivers on static display along with an Atmos demo set up with Elac Speakers and Denon Electronics

The demo was strictly okay, though showcasing of the static display was decent.

We next visited the Cinebels room, which had a lot of equipment on display in a rather haphazard manner. Everything from home theatre set ups to 2 channel set up to static displays were managed in the room. We wanted to hear the Klipsch Cornwalls paired with a Prima Luna Amp & Roksan CD Player. We were informed that the tube amp needs to be kept on for 45 mins to an hour and hence could not be demo’ed as it was currently switched off. We nonetheless requested them to switch it on so that we could hear the set-up once we came back in an hour or so. Sadly, time constraints did not allow us to return to hear them as we had to rush through to cover the rest of the rooms.

The Next room was Harman India’s, which was entirely having only static displays of various models of Revel Loudspeakers, JBL Synthesis, Lexicon, Mark Levinson Electronics. Though well represented, the idea of having static display of everything under 1 room was kind of a let down as most visitors would have loved to hear the Mark Levinson Electronics paired with JBL Everest Speakers or Revel flagship speakers. Sadly, this was not the case. Harman India did have a JBL synthesis home theatre demo on the 15th floor though, which we will cover subsequently.

We now entered the Cadence Audio room where yet again the room consisted of 2 demo set-ups, one having the YG Acoustics Sonja paired with Nagra Mono Block Power amps, Nagra Pre, an SME Turntable and an old Philips RTR Player. The other set up consisted of a pair of Spendor D9 Speakers with Nagra 300B Tube Power Amp, Nagra Pre and Nagra CD Player. All cabling was by siltech. A couple of Spendor speakers were also on static display which am told were played intermittently. We met Mr. Kerry St. James of YG Acoustics, who gave us a whirlwind tour of what YG Acoustics was all about by means of a ipad pictorial presentation, explaining the processes  and technology used to manufacture their speakers. We enjoyed the same post which we briefly heard the 2 demo set-ups as described above. We rather enjoyed both and would specially like to hear the Spendor D9’s again as they have an engaging sound. Sadly, we had to rush as time was running out.

The last room on the 8th floor was the PTC room which was like an explosion waiting to happen. Every bit of space was used up to plonk various items, right from Monster Audio cabling, portable speakers, Focal and Sonus Faber speakers, McIntosh Amp/CD Player on static display,  to a full blown atmos home theatre done right in the middle of the room. We were thoroughly confused as we did not know where to start and subsequently finish. A complete mish mash which made us leave as soon as we could.

Continuing with our coverage of the What HiFi? Show 2017, Mumbai – We now will start with the rooms we visited on the 14th Floor, which consisted of the following exhibitors:

Cinebels(Klipsch/Jamo) had a room full of live and static demo’s of their multimedia speakers, amplifiers, sound bars, head phones, IEM’s and so on. Lots to look at and play with. We found the room to be a much better presentation of equipment that one could see and hear.

LG had their room showing their new range of OLED 4K TV’s

Innovative Information Technology Ltd. had the following on display: Image Speakers (Floor Standers and Book Shelfs) with Naim Uniti Atom, SuperNait2, Metronome CD Player, Nordost Cables, Isolation Devices and Power Boxes. A Musical Fidelity M3Si was kept on static display. Alex Brady from Nordost and Dan Poulton from Naim Audio were at hand to give an in depth demonstration of their respective products. The room was always filled with people as both these gents did their very best to captivate their audiences with their in depth knowledge of their brand and products.

Vinshek had a room showcasing the Cornered Audio Speakers showcasing their consumer range of speakers, on static and demo. We briefly heard them and they were nice to look at and sound. Sadly, the speakers were not connected with a subwoofer, so we felt the product was not ideally showcased. Team Vinshek were in agreement and put their hand up to acknowledge this fact. Since this was their first consumer audio show participation, they will learn from this experience.

Hermit Audio had an all Gamut demo set up consisting of Gamut speakers and electronics. We found this room to be well setup and both the look and sound of the set up was one of the best if not the best of the show. Mr. Bimal Choksi of Hermit Audio was in charge of the room and gave all the visitors a good idea of what the Gamut sound is all about. We wish Hermit Audio takes part in future shows as well.

KEI had 2 rooms, one with Tannoy DC8 Speakers with Hegel AMplifier and Denon CD Player and the other with Elac Unify Speakers with Primare Amplifier and Denon CD Player. Both were set up by a mutual friend of ours and has been doing so on behalf of KEI for all the shows they participate in. Due to paucity of time we could not spend much time in either rooms but what we heard we liked. We personally liked the Tannoy room better, but the Elac Unify speakers also sounded very good.

Lakozy Impex & Audio Excellence had the following on demo at their suite: PSB Image B5 Speakers with BlueSound PowerNode2 whilst the other room was a dolby atmos configured home theatre using Storm Audio Processor, Power Amp with Legacy Audio Speakers. We barely heard the home theatre as it was already full with visitors hence could not get much of an idea of overall sound. The Legacy Audio Speakers were as usual imposing, with the LCR dominating the room.

  • Part 3

Sight & Sound had Aero and Audiostics products on display, mostly static.

Baaroq Designs had a bazaar like display of as many products that they could fit into their room, mainly consisting of products from Mistral, OMZ and Eltek Acoustic. We were pretty much amused seeing the Mistral Speakers which were nothing but clones of B&W Speaker models of yesteryears, in the looks department. More than the demo we were just looking at the amount of similarities in the looks department as stated above and had a brief chat with the persons manning the room. Baaroq Designs have recently been made the distributors for Mistral in India. We wish them the very best in their endeavors.

Shemaroo Corporation had a few Panasonic projectors on static display and 1 model on demo. A couple of Panasonic TV’s also were on demo. They also had a couple of speakercraft inwall, inceiling speakers on static display.

AudioVision India had almost their entire brands on static display. The key word being STATIC. Most of the visitors including us were disappointed to see this sort of arrangement as most often than not the aspirational brand for music enthusiasts has been B&W. A consolation of sorts was that one could atleast hear one B&W product – that being the Zeppelin wireless speaker. Yes, we are being a little bit sarcastic but we can’t hide our disappointment! All we could do is click pics, which we did to make up for the lack of listening pleasure.

The only B&W that was ‘alive’ (pun heavily intended)

The Audio People & Stereo Trend Pvt. Ltd. had a suite having 2 rooms, one had a dedicated Home Theatre and the other a Stereo Set-up respectively. We started with a demo at the home theatre room which consisted of pro audio speakers with dedicated DSP’s for each. Since these were the last 2 rooms we had to cover on the 14th floor and the fact that there was no other visitor present, we decided to plonk ourselves on the inviting sofa and enjoy what was on offer. The clip played also was a familiar one to us (from the movie – Man from U.N.C.L.E), hence we were rather well placed to judge the potential of the set-up. Admittedly, we felt the set up was the best one we heard at the Show as far as a Home Theatre Set-up is concerned, kudos to the people who calibrated the set-up.

The Stereo Room consisted of Monitor Audio PL300II Speakers with Bryston 7BSST Mono Block Power Amplifiers, BP26 Pre Amplifer, BDA-1 DAC with BCD-3 CD Player. We heard a few familiar tracks and appreciated the sound but found it slightly uninvolving and one dimensional. The speakers finish was impeccable and to us they were gorgeous.

  • Part 4

At the 15th Floor, we started of with the Rivera International Room, who though had 2 rooms, we could only cover 1 as the home theatre one was filled with visitors, hence we decided to pop in their other room which had McIntosh Electronics with German Physiks Speakers. Though the effort was taken to set up the pairing to the best of their abilities, sadly the sound was not having any wow factor as one would expect with such odd looking speakers. That does not mean that the sound was bad, just that the ‘X’ factor was clearly missing.

The next room was Absolute Sound, who were showcasing the Kii Audio Model 3 Active Speakers which were in an eye catching bright red color. A Bel Canto Pre and CD Player along with a Mac Book were hooked up to the Model 3’s. As is customary for an Absolute Sound Room, attention to detail was evident and they also took the efforts to control the room as much as they could by means of using certain props as sound treatment to good effect. The sound was very good indeed, just that we felt that the low’s could have been better. Maybe the Absolute Sound Team thought that limiting the bass would help them control the room to a large extent.

Sun Group had 2 rooms, one with a lot of multimedia products including speakers and radio’s mainly on static display whilst the other had the Devialet Phantom Gold Speakers and a B&W 803 D3’s with a Devialet Amp. Sadly, at both the rooms there wasn’t any real interest shown to play the equipment at hand for visitors walking in, so we quickly had a look and walked out to the next rooms.

BenQ had a room which was to showcase their new flagship home projector the W11000, which hadn’t arrived yet and so we quickly moved onto the next room, which had Philips showcasing a couple of their sound bars. One of these models was their new atmos enabled sound bar that is yet to be launched in our market. A couple of demo’s were going on so we just had a quick look and moved onto the next rooms. Nedis & Avaaa had a couple of Thonet & Vander Active Speakers and some Radio’s on demo. A short demo taken of both, from which we liked their radio, that was having an old world charm about it and was also very reasonably priced, to encourage radio enthusiasts to look at it seriously.

Nexus Audio were showcasing a Home Theatre Setup yet again, this time with a Mix of Stage Accompany LCR Speakers with OEM Surrounds and Subwoofer. The speakers were hooked up to a Yamaha AVR and Oppo BluRay Player. A couple of live concerts on bluray were played with intermittent movie clips. A pair of small and very interesting looking speakers(Jern14) were also showcased for the first time in India. What was interesting to know was that the sealed cabinets were made of cast iron and were in a industrial looking grey finish. By themselves they had a very clean, dynamic and coherent sound, but keeping their form factor in mind they definitely needed the support of a subwoofer which was connected in tandem to augment the low frequencies. Overall, we did not enjoy the home theatre showcased as much as we did the JERN14’s as we found the home theatre experience a bit too smooth and unappealing as far as surround sound being showcased. We give the benefit of doubt to the Nexus Audio personnel as they were probably aiming to make the live music concerts sound more musical, to which they may have succeeded to a large extent. Maybe we are more critical on Nexus Audio as each year they raise the bar but this year probably were found being complacent.

Sonodyne had a suite as well, 1 room had a couple of static displays and some new speakers with their processor. The other room had a home theatre set-up.

Leviathan Systems Pvt. Ltd. had a Burmester Set and Audiovector Speakers on static display. The gent running the room was playing music from his laptop, which mostly consisted of MP3 files!

Finally the last 2 rooms to cover, those of MZ Audio Distributions, one having a home theatre set up whilst the other being a stereo set up,  which we helped to set up. The home theatre setup consisted of Morel Octave Signature Speakers with 2 Morel Subwoofers with Marantz AV7702 Processor, MM8077 Power Amplifier and UD7007 BluRay Player. On static display were sets of Mission LX Series and Boston Acoustics A360 Speakers. There also was a Marantz TT5005 Turntable that was played on request.

The Stereo room consisted of the following:

Marantz TT15S1 Reference Turntable, SA14S1SE SACD Player, PM14S1SE Integrated Amplifier, NA11S1SE Network Player and Taga Harmony Diamond F200 Speakers. Entire cabling was by Nordost, consisting of Heimdall2 Speaker Cables and Interconnects, Red Dawn Power Cords, along with QX Power Purifier and Q Base AC Distribution Box. All the electronics were fresh out of the box, having cleared from customs the day before the show started and the speakers were also not played for more than an hour. Inspite of the lack of break in of the collective setup, the visitors appreciated the setup. The last day of the show actually showed a glimpse of what the setup was capable of but sadly for us it was a little too late. For the reasons as stated above, we felt the setup could have sounded much better than it actually did.

KNX ROADSHOW INDIA – TRAINING WORKSHOP MUMBAI

  • WRITTEN BY PULASTYA

KNX National Group – India Association, had a KNX Training Workshop in Mumbai on the 16 & 17th Of September 2016, for which we were invited by Mr. Bhavesh Doshi, who is the Secretary of the KNX National Group – India.  Mr. Christian Stahn, Marketing – KNX(Beligium) was at hand to give us an introduction via slide shows of what KNX is all about and how it can be used by system integrators to get the best results for running applications for home and building controls. This was followed by a presentation given by Mr. Bhavesh Doshi, Secretary of the KNX National Group – India, of how he was part of the group who undertook the lighting controls and monitoring systems set-up of the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which at that point of time was the 5th largest lighting control systems in the world.

What was extremely noteworthy was that with KNX being part of the home and building control, one has the ability to ensure energy savings of between 40 to 60 percent for shutter, single room, lighting and ventilation control!

KNX National Group – India Association also conducted a lucky draw for system integrator’s attending the workshop, to win some of the KNX software tools.

Some more info on KNX:

KNX Association is the creator and owner of the KNX technology – the worldwide STANDARD for all applications in home and building control, ranging from lighting and shutter control to various security systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, monitoring, alarming, water control, energy management, metering as well as household appliances, audio and lots more. The technology can be used in new as well as in existing home and buildings. For members of the KNX Association the system is royalty-free, moreover can be implemented on any processor platform. All products bearing the KNX logo are certified in order to guarantee system compatibility, interworking and interoperability.

KNX is the only global standard for home and building control with –

A single, manufacturer independent design and commissioning tool (ETS).

A complete set of supported communication media (TP, PL, RF and IP).

A complete set of supported configuration modes (system and easy mode).

KNX is approved as European Standard (CENELEC EN 50090 and CEN EN 13321-1). International Standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3). Chinese Standard (GB/T 20965). US Standard (ANSI/ASHRAE 135).

This standard is based upon more than 24 years of experience in the market including its predecessors, EIB, EHS and BatiBUS.

KNX is a standardized (EN 50090, ISO/IEC 14543), OSI-based network communications protocol for building automation. KNX is the successor to, and convergence of, three previous standards: the European Home Systems Protocol (EHS), BatiBUS, and the European Installation Bus (EIB or Instabus). The KNX standard is administered by the KNX Association. The standard is based on the communication stack of EIB but enlarged with the physical layers, configuration modes and application experience of BatiBUS and EHS. KNX defines several physical communication media:

Twisted pair wiring (inherited from the BatiBUS and EIB Instabus standards)

Powerline networking (inherited from EIB and EHS – similar to that used by X10)

Radio (KNX-RF)

Infrared Ethernet (also known as EIBnet/IP or KNXnet/IP)

KNX is designed to be independent of any particular hardware platform. A KNX Device Network can be controlled by anything from an 8-bit microcontroller to a PC, according to the needs of a particular implementation. The most common form of installation is over twisted pair medium.

All the devices for a KNX installation are connected together by a two wire bus (the most common form of installation), thus allowing them to exchange data. The function of the individual bus devices is determined by their project planning, which can be changed and adapted at any time.

Sensors (e.g. push buttons, wind-, temperature-, movement-sensors)

Actuators (dimming units, electrical heating valves, displays)

System devices and components (e.g. Line-Couplers, Backbone-Couplers)

Sensors are the starting point for every action, because they gather information and send it on the bus as a data telegram. This can be information about room temperatures, movements, wind measurements or manually input instructions (Push buttons). Sensors are selected depending on the required application. Actuators receive data telegrams which are then converted into actions. This can include controlling blinds, dimming lights or controlling heating and air conditioning systems. Actuators are also selected depending on the required application and consist of a bus coupler and an application module with the corresponding application program. The application program is loaded into the devices together with the project design and commissioning software via a system component called interface (either serial or USB interface) connected to the PC and the bus. The two-wire installation bus is routed in parallel to the 230 V electrical power supply connects all devices and systems of the household technology together, and transmits all the control signals. It looks the same as the DALI protocol bus.

MEET AND GREET WITH MAURICE ENGLER – MERGING TECHNOLOGIES

  • WRITTEN BY DENOM

M/s. Modi Digital, the distributors for Merging Technologies-Switzerland, arranged for a meet and greet with Maurice Engler – Project Manager/Training Expert, Merging Technologies at Lakozy Mumbai, to showcase their network attached digital to analogue converter (NADAC) Model MC-8 and also provide a glimpse of the company background.

The Merging NADAC was hooked up with PSB T3 Speakers & NAD Master Series Power Amplifier, connected with Supra Cabling. The Merging NADAC basically come in Pro Audio & Home Audio Avatar’s. Both versions are offered in 2 Channel & 8 Channel Options. Merging Technologies has also worked extensively with Roon Labs, to provide a player that seamlessly integrates with the NADAC. However, Merging Technologies also provide the end user of having the freedom to use their own favored players so basically one can opt for a NADAC version without the roon player built in as well.

A computer with playback software and ASIO driver or DoP, connected by USB cable is very convenient & simple to work with. Hence, most DAC companies stick with USB 2.0, since it is well known and relatively easy to implement. But professional applications (recording studios, concert halls, production facilities, large multi-room installations, mastering sites) require much more complex capabilities. There is a requirement for much longer cable lengths which run into the hundreds of feet where excess noise, signal attenuation and support for time-critical traffic like audio signals is critical. There must also be support for multiple devices that can work together to accomplish audio input/output. This means networking and the best implementation for all of this currently would be gigabit ethernet. To do this, Merging Technologies developed Ravenna, a TCP/IP protocol and application set for audio over Ethernet which is fully supported in the Audio Engineering Society’s AES67 standard. This allows Merging Technologies products to use ASIO (PC/Windows) or Core Audio (Mac) drivers to communicate and network with one another reliably, over much longer distances and in more complex arrangements. Since Ravenna is fully compatible with the AES67 standard, all Merging Technologies Ravenna devices will talk with those of other manufacturers using AES67. This is very important for professional settings, since large and complex implementations are not cheap and are not easily replaced or upgraded.  Post description of the NADAC and why Merging Technologies were one of the first few in developing a DAC with the Network Protocol, Maurice played various genre’s of music to provide us with a brief understanding of what the NADAC is capable of. We were quite impressed with the capabilities of the NADAC and look forward to reviewing one soon.

KRIX AUDIO MEET & GREET – INDIA 2016

  • WRITTEN BY PULASTYA

M/s. Visual Vibrations Pvt. Ltd., Nagpur – the distributors for Krix Audio, organised a meet and greet with Mr. Ashley Krix, who is the Director – Purchasing and Production at Krix Audio.

About Krix Audio:

A passion for sound – It was 1974, the Vietnam war was still raging, cyclone Tracy was whirling its way to Darwin and David Bowie was singing about Diamond Dogs. Listening to records on his own hand built stereo system, a young, bright-eyed, long haired, music lover, Scott Krix who had just graduated from University as an electronic engineer, had an epiphany. Getting together with a mate from his home town of Loxton, Scott opened the Acoustic Foundry in Goodwood, Adelaide. He’d been making speakers for his family, friends, and mates of mates for years. He loved the sensation he got when dropping the pin on a new record, hearing the sound of it envelope the room, feeling his hair stand up on end. The way Scott saw it, there was always something to learn from sound. His friend took the reins at the shop while Scott built the speakers and the place soon filled with HiFi obsessed hippies and uni students looking to ‘design their own speakers’ from the comfort of the Foundry’s old ‘Dentist Chair’ foraged from a city night club. This was the birth of the Krix Home Grown (HG) series. In 1978, the manager of Goodwood Road’s Capri Theatre, noticed Scott’s handiwork and commissioned him to design and build a new set of cinema speakers. Not taking the opportunity lightly, Scott went about solving an acoustic problem that had plagued the industry for years – inventing the world’s first infinite baffle speaker system. The Australian cinema industry soon got wind of the amazing sound at the Capri and it wasn’t long before Scott was invited to build and install his infinite baffle speakers at every major picture house in Australia. Then the boom came. Cinema multiplexes hit their stride in the 80s and 90s, and whether it was the ethereal sounds of Spielberg’s ET at Adelaide’s Hindley Street cinema, or the thriving synth of the Flashdance soundtrack at Sydney’s George Street theatre, it was Krix speakers behind it all. Trends came and went but one thing remained the same – the artistic pursuit of delivering the highest quality sound through the highest quality speakers. It’s now been 42 years since Scott Krix sold his first speakers, but the story remains the same. Scott and his band of brothers, engineers and designers, continue to innovate, creating Australian made and manufactured speakers for people who want to go from simply listening, to experiencing, sound.

Subsequent to the meet and greet, Vikas Kothari, MD – Visual Vibrations Pvt. Ltd. and his team gave us invitees a demo of the Krix MX-30 Speakers consisting of the the LCR channels along with dual subwoofers. The surround speakers used were Ultraphonix.

We shall be writing a mini review on the above set-up in the near future, stay tuned!
